The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy (ZID) recently conducted a Children’s Etiquette, Grooming and Life Skills Workshop aimed at empowering teenagers with essential values and practical skills that promote confidence, discipline and positive character development. The programme was designed to create an interactive and supportive learning environment that nurtures good manners, self-respect and respect for others, preparing young people for responsible participation in society.
The workshop covered a wide range of key modules focusing on personal development and social behaviour. Participants were trained in the importance of good manners through the use of polite expressions such as “please,” “thank you” and “excuse me,” which form the foundation of respectful interaction. Emphasis was also placed on personal grooming and hygiene, highlighting how cleanliness, neat appearance and mental well-being contribute to self-confidence and positive social engagement.
Sessions on proper etiquette and deportment taught teenagers appropriate behaviour in different settings, including at home, school and in public spaces. This included guidance on posture, eye contact, respectful communication and appropriate dress. Communication skills training enabled participants to express themselves clearly and confidently, while lessons on public conduct reinforced the importance of discipline, courtesy and accountability.
The programme further addressed personal growth through self-esteem development, helping participants build resilience, self-worth and a positive self-image. Leadership capacity was nurtured through the introduction of the Five Ps of Leadership for Children Purpose, Perseverance, Positivity, Patience and Planning encouraging young people to develop strong values and goal-oriented mindsets.
In recognition of current social challenges, the workshop also focused on drug and substance abuse awareness, educating participants on the dangers of harmful substances and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. Cyber safety and responsible internet usage were also emphasized, equipping teenagers with practical knowledge to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
The workshop reinforced Golden Rules for children, including respect for self and others, good manners, personal and mental hygiene and avoidance of harmful behaviours. The programme concluded with the awarding of certificates to participants, acknowledging their commitment and encouraging the continued practice of the skills learned. Through this initiative, ZID reaffirmed its commitment to developing confident, disciplined and responsible future leaders equipped with essential life skills.
