ZID Equips MSU Staff for Ceremonial Excellence

A graduation ceremony is more than a celebration; it is a reflection of an institution’s excellence, professionalism and prestige.

In preparation for its upcoming graduation ceremony, Midlands State University (MSU) hosted a three-day Ceremonial Protocol Training Programme from 19–21 August 2026 in Gweru, facilitated by the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy (ZID).

The programme was facilitated by Academic V. A. Chikanda, Chairperson and Principal Lecturer at ZID and was designed to equip MSU staff with practical knowledge and skills in ceremonial protocol, etiquette, grooming, deportment, professional conduct and event management in preparation for the University’s Grand Graduation Ceremony scheduled for the end of August 2026.

The training focused on the principles and application of Diplomatic, State, Corporate and Social Protocol in graduation ceremonies and other prestigious events. Particular attention was given to the principles of ceremonial protocol, Order of Precedence, titles and forms of address, receiving and handling distinguished guests, ceremonial proceedings, event coordination and guidelines for appropriate decorum during prestigious occasions.

A key component of the programme was the training and mentorship of Heads and Supervisors responsible for Protocol and Ushering functions. The sessions strengthened their capacity to effectively coordinate, supervise and guide protocol personnel and ushers during prestigious events. Emphasis was placed on protocol and ushering functions, reception and escort of  VVIPs and VIPs, seating arrangements, movement of distinguished guests, processional and recessional procedures, deployment and supervision of ushers  and coordination among protocol, ushering, security and event management teams.

The programme further underscored ceremonial protocol and event management techniques for State occasions and graduation ceremonies, highlighting the importance of precision, preparation, coordination, discipline and attention to detail in the successful execution of formal events. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that every aspect of a prestigious occasion is conducted with dignity, decorum, confidence and professionalism.

The engagement reflects ZID’s continued commitment to promoting excellence in protocol and ceremonial management across Zimbabwe, while strengthening the capacity of institutions and their protocol leadership to effectively coordinate and supervise distinguished occasions with professionalism, confidence and distinction.
