The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy (ZID) had the distinct honour of attending the U.S. Embassy Freedom 250 Film Screening, hosted by the Embassy of the United States of America in Zimbabwe as part of the commemorations marking the 250th Anniversary of American Independence.
Held at Westgate Platinum Entertainment Cinema in Harare, the event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, academia, development partners, students and distinguished guests to celebrate America’s remarkable journey over the past two and a half centuries.
The screening of the acclaimed film National Treasure provided more than entertainment. It offered a compelling reflection on the founding ideals of the United States freedom, democracy, constitutional governance and national identity. The film served as a reminder of how history, culture, and national values continue to shape the identity and global influence of one of the world’s leading nations.
For participants from the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy, the experience was an eye-opener. It highlighted the extraordinary evolution of the United States into a global leader in technological innovation, scientific advancement, entrepreneurship, higher education and humanitarian engagement. The celebration underscored how visionary leadership, strong institutions, innovation and respect for democratic values can contribute to national development and international influence.
A memorable highlight of the evening was the opening address delivered by U.S. Ambassador Ms. Pamela M. Tremont. Her thoughtful remarks eloquently introduced the significance of Freedom 250 and the historical context of the film. The presentation was a masterclass in public diplomacy and statecraft, reflecting the enduring principles, aspirations and diplomatic traditions that continue to represent the United States on the global stage. Her address demonstrated the power of diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding, strengthening international partnerships and celebrating shared values.
The event also provided an excellent platform for networking and cultural diplomacy. Students invited to the screening had the privilege of interacting with diplomats, professionals, and fellow participants. Members of the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy were particularly delighted to reconnect with several ZID students and alumni, reaffirming the Institute’s growing community of professionals committed to advancing diplomacy and international relations.
The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy extends its sincere appreciation to the United States Embassy in Harare for the invitation and for organising a memorable celebration that promoted cultural exchange, historical appreciation and diplomatic engagement. Such initiatives continue to strengthen the longstanding relations between Zimbabwe and the United States while providing valuable learning opportunities for aspiring diplomats and international relations practitioners.
As the United States commemorates 250 years of independence, the occasion serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of diplomacy, innovation, freedom and international cooperation in building a more peaceful and prosperous world.
