ZID Chairperson and Principal Lecturer Speaks on G20 and Africa’s Opportunity on Classic 263

Mr. Vova Chikanda, Chairperson and Principal Lecturer of the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy, featured on Classic 263’s “Daily Dose” with host Moe Chanda, under the theme “Is the G20 Summit a Win for Africa?”

He celebrated the importance of the G20 to Africa and argued that he sees it in a positive light, not negative. However, he acknowledged the persistent inequality within global financial institutions but noted that South Africa’s current G20 chairmanship presents a strategic opportunity for the continent. “The G20 has technology. It’s better to rub shoulders with those already there so we can learn,” he remarked.

Mr. Chikanda emphasised the need for Africa to stop exporting raw materials and instead focus on manufacturing finished products. He also urged investment in technology and AI to enhance innovation across the continent.

He further underscored the significant role of the African diaspora, encouraging them to return and share knowledge and expertise gained in developed countries for Africa’s transformation. Highlighting Rwanda and the Asian Tigers, he expressed optimism that Africa can become a global tech force with the right vision and strategy.

The presenter asked why the Trump Administration is not attending the G20 Summit hosted by South Africa suggesting whether it is due to racism or sabotage.

Mr. Chikanda responded diplomatically by saying, “I think one will be cruel to the Trump Administration. They have gone for 41 days without money to run the Government… they are in trouble… when there’s a government shutdown, there’s no money for travel…”

He later emphasized the importance of diplomacy in promoting African development, stating that the presence of peace unlocks the  doors of development.
